Terrifying Enchantress-Keralam

Started by 7 30 from vellembalam. There were 4 of us including a 10 month old baby ponnu.She was the curious among us to explore chathancode , near agastyarkudam. We were in a ‘ Ravera’, reached vitura by 9, had puttu and payaru with pappadam from a small home come ‘restaurant’., and appam and green piece curry were packed for our lunch.
Entered the chatahancode forest range by 10. reached the forest office, Initially didn’t get permission. Sivakumar sir phoned deputy forest officer for the same, after
Which we proceeded towards chandra’ s house, the guy accompanied us through out the trip. He was born and brought up in that forest. His house was thatched with the leaves of bamboo. Liked the house very much. It was so cool to stay inside. Kannan was the handsome dog of chandran who barked incessantly after seeing us . there was a female monkey nearby, who was brought there by somebody outside the forest, and were living near that house for the past 3 yrs. Chandran’s mother told me that the monkey was very frail and fragile when she came there initially after which she put both weight and beauty. I took her photo. But I couldn’t take the photo of kannan since he ran while was about to click. Chandra told that kannan is an amazing dog, he will everyday roam in the forest , will take bath in the streams everyday and he knows every nook and corner of the forest-i liked kannan . After leaving our vehicle with the driver near that house, we started walking, towards the interior of the forest along with Chandran. Initially I was feeling a little tiredness. As we were walking, sound of flowing water consoled my ear which was becoming more intense as we walked towards the interior of the forest.
That was a typical evergreen forest, full of giant and huge trees, and Liana formations- a symbiotic relationship between various trees for mutual support in strong winds.
As we proceeded further we were able to see elephant droppings, when chandran told elephants came through that way 2 weeks before, we all started discussing various ways to protect us from an elephant attack. I was looking around for places to hide in case of the same.
Soon we approached a steep rock, which we climbed with a little bit difficulty, soon sights of more steep rocks unfolded before us. But we all climbed the whole rocks and the path full of thick roots and firm stones. I was wondering how Siva Kumar sir was climbing those steep rocks with Ponnu in his hands!!! It was a little bit scaring sight for me!! But Sir was as firm as those steep rocks!! Throughout the path , on one side, was flowing stream of water which was sometimes roaring , and at times whispering, and booth the sounds were very much soothing for our ears and minds.
Actually we had entered another world of, far away from the madding and the maddening crowd of the city.

On the way was mottilppazham, a fruit which was beard on the bottom of the stem of a huge tree which is the diet of several animals including elephants, monkeys, bears birds etc etc.
On the way were two Caves, which can be used as a shelter from rain.
Soon, after one and a half hours of steep path, we reached a giant waterfall, the sight of which instantly made me feel like an ant in the ocean. That was both terrible and horrible and of course beautiful! But we can never measure the rabidness of nature there! I was wondering we know only about the mild soothing beauty of Keralam, but the threatening, frightening beauty of keralam, we all are yet to know, may be never known, even to keralites.
Near to that waterfall, we all sat on a huge rock, for our lunch-appam and curry (green piece)-but the appam was sour and the curry was not good, Narayanan sir gave us ‘mixture’ to eat with appam. After lunch we started our return journey, which was not so difficult like climbing the rocks.
In between we had a ‘bath’ in the cool stream which was the most delicious dish of the trip! Narayanan sir prepared a fire to cook banana and chandran went to pluck some leaves for carrying the same. We all had the banana. And towards the end of the forest, at another point of the stream-by this point it has already became a river! One of the coolest rivers in keralam!! I simply sat inside the water there for almost one hour, and several small fishes were kissing by hands and feet!!
Narayanan sir was preparing tea for us on a nearby rock. After almost one hour, the tea was ready which the tastiest tea I ever drank was!

After the ‘Tea –Ceremony’, we continued our return, and soon we reached Chandran’s house where our vehicle was parked, There the driver- Shafeek was sleeping. Kannan was there this time he was not so frightened as before but the moment I was about to click my mobile camera, he would turn his head. Somehow I manged one or two snaps. Chandran mother eechi was there along with his sisters . We said goodbye to all and our Ravera, proceeded towards trivandrum city.
On the way we all were completely transformed by the enchanting beauty, the horrifying silence and the mind boggling waterfalls of Chatancode forests, which gave us all a completely new perception about Keralam.

but as usual, humans are doing their bit of destruction through throwing plastic covers and alcohol glass bottles all over the forests :( which were present almost everywhere in the forest and who is giving permission to these people to use alcohol inside the forest?? :-o even though the place is very well guarded by the government :think:

after going to the forest when i came back i feel like going back, hope to live there all the time. The mad humans running after artificial things, whereas the natural things are in the forest. Although on the whole the kallar forest trip was not like the arippa forest trip, which i enjoyed thoroughly, in the kallar trip something was there i like which is making me smile whenever i think about it which i can say only this!

PARADISE FLY CATCHER

First time in my life i was able to spot independently a paradise fly catcher, yesterday at kanakakkunuu trivandrum.While i was a having a walk at kanakakkunuu around 6 i heard a voice almost similar to a cheevidu which i heard 2 days before also on the same spot at the same time. But this time although i passed that bamboo plants, i went back stood there, at last i spotted it- a paradise fly catcher! a migratory bird from the himalayas usually visiting kerala around winter.
I recorded it sound and tried to take a photo but the photo was not clear since the it was sitting at a height.
I called Sushanth sir-founder of warblers and Waiders, Yessss it is confirmed that it is the paradise Fly catcher@!!!!!. He said the most probably it is a yoiung male and it will be soon going back to himalayas.Its colour was pale ash colored body with a black small head with 2 horn like structures and a lengthy orange tail which is divided at the end ,into two.Sushant sir told that since it is young it will be soon changing its color to bright blue and violet, while approaching the egg laying season to attract females.Alas i did it !! Sushanth sir also told that it is almost one and a half yrs since a paradise fly catcher was spotted at that site!!I am glad that i was the first one to spot this beautiful bird once more at kanakakkunnu. near the bamboo trees!!

why keralites are so dump about all those happening around them? yesterday the news of a terrorist group-coming to cherttala, alappuzha came out. But everybody wants to believe that it is a hoax. Keralites wants to live in a self created mental world. They dont want o be in the real world. They want to believe everything is safe and secure.
They dont want to believe about global warming, they dont want to believe about the resources of the earth being depleted so fast, they dont want to believe about the after effects of burning plastic, they dont want to believe about the after effects of polluting water resources-their most sacred river-bharata puzha is alomost dead-chattatinokkume jeevichirikkilum)- still they are in a dream world-as when i attended a seminar about global warming-one of the politicians said global warming may come -say after 500 years!!-such are the people of kerala. i did it i just went to their house rang the bell one boy cam out i took Feb 11 'Hindu'
also. i asked whether anybody knows English here he went inside to call the super wiser he was sleeping .he came out and he was a malayali and i explained to him by showing the news which describes the death of one person in trivandrum due to dengue fever.i told please explain to others also that plastics should not be carelessly thrown around, i told i just want to pass this message and today i am going to clean the plastic trash please don't feel anything. I collected almost all the plastics, bottles, some bottles was full of rotten milk! which were on the ground How they are living there i don't know i collected everything in a big sack and went thru the road carrying the sack on my back to the place near poultry farm pettah where usually the corporation vehicle comes to collect the trash.I felt a little satisfied because at least for the time being the mosquitoes will be less.

today i got up at 4 30 i the morning and was attacked by mosquitoes!normally there are no mosquitoes in my room.I know why because just nearby my house a group pf Tamils are living for the past 3 to 4 months. They are throwing plastic on their backyard I now decided to go there collect all the plastic in a sack tell them what i am doing show them 'the Hindu' news of February 11th describing how dengue affected the city now and God help me in this.I am waiting to be little more light.

yesterday i saved a kingfisher kid from a nearby fish tank. It cam in search of fish but got stranded in the waters and could n,t escape .It was such a lovely kingfisher, beautiful smart and within 15 minutes it flew away! regaining it's strength!I named it Kishi! Where are u Kishi, now?
